Tata Naka AW23

Tata Naka is a brand born from the creative union of two Georgian identical twin sisters, Tamara and Natasha Surguladze, who graduated from London’s Central St Martins at the turn of the millennium.

For the brand’s AW23-24 revival, Tata Naka took to the stage with a collection inspired by the story of ballerinas and their rehearsals. Showcasing the pieces through the means of a beautifully choreographed ballet rehearsal from the Masters of Ballet Academy, led by their current principal and former lead principal ballerina of English National Ballet Elena Glurjidze, the brand quickly set the tone for their collection.

Floaty skirts, leotards and leg warmers in the classic ballerina’s pastel colour palette of baby pinks, blues and purples characterise Tata Naka’s collection, an athleisure evoking the dreamy land of the languid yet effortlessly meticulous ballerina amidst her rehearsal. Where no detail is spared when it comes to the language of dance, neither are Tata Naka’s garments. The pieces are a beautiful mosaic of vintage florals and geometric prints, feminine bows and beaded panels hidden amongst mesh and chiffon fabrics. And yet, these same pieces are cut into clean silhouettes and crafted with fabrics that fall readily off the body, preserving the ballerina’s essential and sacred space, a space of unconditional movement.

Tata Naka’s designs continue to extend beyond the studio or stage and into the everyday world of the off-duty dancer. The collection ceases to neglect the cosy, cashmere knits, blazers, bombers and oversized coats that have been a part of Tata Nata’s fashion journey, and once again, the sisters apply their creative research and story-telling skills to breathe new lives into their garments. Herringbone tweed is explored in a variety of colours, whilst a simple glance at a sweatshirt and you’ll only find the delicate depictions of the tragic yet beautiful love stories of Giselle, Romeo and Juliet and The Swan ballets crafted into the fabric.

With a timeless twist on the style embraced behind the scenes by those dancing divinities, Tata Naka’s AW collection takes what current cultural trends call “balletcore” and elevates it to a standard that only Tata Naka can achieve. The collection begs to be worn by an individual that is as bold and as beautiful as the pieces are themselves.
