This season to celebrate 35 years of Paul Costelloe at London Fashion week, the designer reflected upon past seasons from his early years as a designer in the late 60's and early 70's. Contemplation on his previous collections, brought freshness and freedom to his approach for AW21.

After a year of uncertainty, the Costelloe woman is bold, brave and optimistic
— Paul Costelloe

60s references seem befitting for AW21. Now, as then, fashion is on the precipice of seismic changes. The 60's bold aesthetics reflected a shift in mood and possibilities. Similarly, the pandemic has forced the industry to take a look at its ethics and practices. Fashion has had to adapt. Both decades looked on with expectations of what was achievable; then we dreamed of lunar landings, now we are joyful at the prospect of freedom and the chance to explore our own planet again.

Still, we've seen so many designers thrive through the recent challenges, finding new ways of working and launching their latest looks. The essence of this collection focused on that spirit, youth's expectations and energy. A celebration of an accomplished past, a triumphant present and a positive future.

As always, Paul Costelloe is a master of patterns and textural blends. Golden palettes and autumnal tones of yellow, cedar, burnt orange, greens, and dark blues brought a sense of joy and optimism to day one of the London shows. A great way to start. Sharp tailoring and structural outerwear complemented softer silhouettes for the evening. while bodysuits featuring in-house prints by William Costelloe in bold floral patterns, lent garments an edge of athleticism against the classical, more structured shapes. Hair was sleek and eyes were bold, reminiscent of early Twiggy. To complete the look, outfits were embellished with acrylic bracelets and statement jewels.

We have a deep appreciation for the striking looks of the ‘60s, so it was great to see them reimagined with a contemporary twist at Paul Costelloe. We are big fans of the designer's work, and the sunshine hues and vibrant print make a powerful statement about those who adorn his clothes. As the designer expressed, '"After a year of uncertainty, the Costelloe woman is bold, brave and optimistic".

Glimpsing backwards serves as a reassuring reminder that we've faced challenges in the past, but we are resourceful, adaptable, and can use these experiences to learn and, make changes and benefit. And, what better way to celebrate this than to wear a collection that encapsulates this determination, ingenuity and spirit.
