Between Worlds
Zhaoyi Yu was born to a Chinese family in Southern China. He enjoyed and was greatly influenced by the surrounding nature of the city in his teenage years. The city is described as poetic, sentimental and, at the same time, sharing a strong sense of modernity which has great attributes to his brand’s ethos and his personal aesthetic. Zhaoyi’s design rigorously acquired technical skills and high craftsmanship, including pattern cutting and various textile experimentations, which he had developed while studying at the London College of Fashion. His collection stimulates by his own narratives, taking inspiration from his self-reflection and related current social issues while conducting the beauty of fluidity and inclusiveness.
The style of Zhaoyi Yu's brand and personal identity can be described as surrealistic and fragile, his wardrobe presented the wearer with a romantic, thus flourishing fits for both men and women.
ZhaoYi has shown a strong sense of self in his first collection, Out of Body, telling a story of sensuality, surrealism and romance. Taking a look at demi-couture and classic tailoring, out of the body is an ode to his own sense of romanticism; it is a tribute to the wandering minds. Layers of delicate organza, translucent, booming silhouette invite the observer a lightful and powerful imagery. It is a real fantasy.
This collection is inspired by ADHD, which makes me sometimes unable to concentrate and uncontrollably enter daydreaming and makes me often switch between these two different worlds. I feel a strong conflict psychologically. So in this collection, I aim to explore the connection between this conflict and me to visualize the feeling by restoring the situations that most distract me.
